Removing dust from scans is long and painful. Fortunately, scanners makers incorporate technologies do do that. Nikon and Minolta use ICE, Canon has FARE. How efficient is it and does it hurts image?

Here is the whole picture with, in red, the zone I'll present further. This is a 4000 dpi scan from a 35 mm slide.

Here is what it gives without FARE.

The Canon driver provides two FARE modes: Medium and Strong:

Medium

strong.jpg (21770 bytes)

Strong

The Medium mode does remove almost all dust without degradation. This is not the case of the Strong mode. Image is altered: some lines disappear and sharpness is affected.
